Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated the current men’s doubles world champions by 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 to clinch the Thailand Open title.

Indian Duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty created history by winning their first-ever Super 500 title, after defeating Chinese shuttlers Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen in the men’s doubles final at Thailand Open 2019 on Sunday Aug4. The Indian duo who was unseeded in the tournament went into the finals as massive underdogs against Chinese pairs, who had won the World Championships and BWF World Tour finals last year. The Indian players were the odd one out in this tournament by giving some splendid performance in the finals Rankireddy and Shetty won 21-19,18-21,21-18 to clinch the Thailand Open title.

Indian shuttlers started brilliantly in the first set of the final match and led to the 11-9 at the mid-break interval of the first game. At one stage both Pairs reached to 18-18 points but the Indian pairs won two crucial points to open a small gap and claim the set by 21-19 win.

Second set Chinese shuttlers made a comeback and won the set by a 3 points gap 18-21and take the game into the final decider set.

In the final set, the Chinese shuttlers took a lead of 6-3 but the Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty didn’t give up and made a comeback with an 11-9 lead till mid-break.

This Indian doubles pair continue their lead against the Chinese duo and clinch the title of their historical final by 21-18.

On this victory Pullela Gopichand, chief coach of the Indian Team and who brought these two together said that this win will hold them in good stead in the future.

With just 2 weeks left for the World Championships, this victory is quite significant as the Indian shuttlers will be among the top contenders.
